Three Key Symptoms of Covid to Look Out for as Winter Approaches

Medical experts have warned that Covid infections are expected to rise across the UK over the next 12 months.

As winter approaches and temperatures drop, health experts are warning that Covid-19 cases are expected to increase. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has stated that alongside the usual rise in other respiratory winter viruses, such as flu, Covid infections are set to rise.

The latest subvariant of the Covid-19 virus, known as BA.2.86, was first identified in the UK in August. While experts have stated that this new strain is no more likely to cause serious illness than other circulating variants, they emphasize the importance of vaccinations in providing protection against the virus.

The number of Covid cases in England and Wales has shown a decline after an initial rise in early autumn. However, in the week ending October 1, the Public Health Agency in Northern Ireland reported a slight increase in the number of new Covid infections detected through clinical and routine testing.

In England it was reported 15,797 new Covid cases in the week leading up to October 7, with a slight decrease from the previous week’s figures.

As the weather gets colder, it is expected that Covid infections will rise again. Hospitalizations of Covid-positive patients in England have already reached a five-month high, indicating a wider spread of the virus. As of October 8, NHS England reported 4,414 patients in hospital with Covid, marking a 14% increase from the previous week.

To prevent further spread of the virus, it is crucial to be aware of the most common Covid symptoms. The ZOE Covid Health Study has identified three key warning signs to watch out for.

    A runny or blocked nose

    A headache

    Feeling tired

In addition to these primary symptoms, other possible symptoms include a sore throat, sneezing, body aches and pains, shortness of breath, and a high temperature.

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is advised to stay at home and avoid contact with others. You can resume your normal activities once you feel better or no longer have a high temperature.

With the likelihood of a surge in infections over the winter, it is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. Alongside practicing good hygiene, such as regular hand washing and wearing masks, getting vaccinated against Covid and flu can provide added protection.

It is important to follow the guidance provided by healthcare professionals and stay updated with the latest information from reliable sources.
