A new speed limit of 50mph will be imposed on the A52 near Boston
The speed limit on a section of the A52 near Boston will be reduced from 60mph to 50mph due to residents’ concerns and accident reports. Lincolnshire County Council’s planning and regulation committee reviewed the speed limit for the straight stretch of road outside Donington in their meeting last Monday (December 2).
Ward Councillor Jane King observed that most accidents on the road are minor and occur without police involvement, so they don’t appear in official statistics.
She mentioned that Donington Parish Council would have preferred a reduction to 40mph but admitted that Lincolnshire Police deemed 50mph “more realistic.”
Councillor King also pointed out that pedestrian traffic in the village has increased since the new Co-op opened, noting, “We have got people with buggies and small kids along with older people who have to wait until the road is completely clear, and sometimes it can take a while.”
There have also been reports of lorries stopping on the A52 to visit the new store.
Councillor Marianne Overton recognized residents’ concerns and questioned whether a 40mph limit would be feasible.
However, Councillor Tom Smith, a Conservative member, believed it should remain at 60mph, arguing that enforcing the change over the 300-meter stretch would be challenging: “You could never enforce that.”
Councillor Charlotte Vernon proposed that the 50mph limit would be a “suitable compromise.” This suggestion was seconded by Chairman Councillor Ian Fleetwood and approved.
