Tourists in Benidorm: The Risks of Buying Dodgy Cocktails
Holidaymakers are being warned not to buy cocktails on the beaches of Benidorm. These dodgy cocktails can make you seriously ill warns the local Benidorm council
Benidorm, a popular holiday resort known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife, attracts thousands of British tourists each year. However, recent reports have highlighted a concerning trend that puts these tourists at risk – the return of mojito sellers offering dodgy cocktails.
In recent years, mojito sellers have made a comeback on the beaches of Benidorm, targeting unsuspecting tourists looking to indulge in refreshing drinks under the sun. These sellers often operate outside the regulated establishments and offer cocktails at significantly lower prices. However, the low-price tag comes at a potential cost to the health and well-being of tourists.
Socialist spokesperson, Cristina Escoda told Spanish newspaper Informacion.es that the presence of these vendors on the city’s sandbanks has “increased” since the beginning of summer.
“Taking a simple walk, you can see an incessant trickle of people carrying out these illegal activities with total normality,” she said. “This not only affects the image we offer to tourists but also seriously harms the city’s hospitality sector.”
And she warned: “It can put the health of consumers at risk. The mojiteros handle the products with their hands in the trunk of a car or on the ground itself and obviously have no sanitary control.”
She called on the PP government team to act to tackle this problem: “We know that it is complicated, but part of the solution must involve both increasing the police presence and reinforcing the information and awareness campaigns for residents and tourists.”
Benidorm city council has said it is dealing with the problem and has increased police presence on the city’s beaches during the summer season.
“In the busiest hours, there are 16 officers,” said a spokesperson. “It is carried out not only on the beach and on the promenades but also from the water and from the air thanks to the zodiac and drone service.”
