More Than 1million People Could Be Claiming Extra £67 A Week Says DWP

Lincolnshire People Need To Check If They Can Receive Pension Credit

Benefits of claiming pension credit: don’t miss out on extra income. DWP have said that more than one million people could be receiving extra money if they claim pension credit.

The Government is urging around a million people around the UK including in Lincolnshire to claim an extra £67 a week they are entitled to.

According to the DWP, there are people living in Lincolnshire which includes Boston, Lincoln, Grimsby, and Skegness who are entitled to pension credit but have failed to apply.

Some people could see their income boosted by thousands of pounds from making a successful claim for Pension Credit, with the average award being worth more than £3,500 per year.

In a bid to ensure that individuals receive the financial assistance they are entitled to, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is urging around a million people to claim an extra £67 per week through Pension Credit.

This additional benefit can significantly boost the income of eligible individuals, with the average award amounting to over £3,500 annually. However, despite the availability of this support, many entitled individuals fail to claim it.

In fact, previous estimates indicate that up to 850,000 families who were eligible for Pension Credit did not take advantage of the benefit, resulting in an unclaimed pool of up to £1.7 billion.

Pension Credit is a welfare benefit provided by the UK government to support pensioners in maintaining a minimum income level.

It is designed to top up the incomes of single pensioners and couples, ensuring they receive at least £201.05 and £306.85 per week, respectively.

Individuals with disabilities or caring responsibilities may be eligible for even higher amounts. However, the benefits of Pension Credit extend beyond the additional income it provides.

Even a small award can open doors to various other benefits, including assistance with housing costs, council tax, and heating bills.

Making a successful claim for Pension Credit can have a significant impact on an individual’s financial well-being. It not only ensures a steady income but also provides access to a range of additional benefits that can alleviate financial burdens.

The DWP has been actively reaching out to eligible individuals through a trial “invitation to claim” initiative, sending letters to those believed to be eligible. It is crucial not to ignore these letters and instead take the necessary steps to apply for Pension Credit.

How to Claim Pension Credit

Claiming Pension Credit is a straightforward process that can be completed online, over the phone, or via a paper form.

To initiate the process, individuals can visit the official government website at www.gov.uk/pension-credit/how-to-claim. The website provides detailed instructions and guidance on how to proceed with the application.

Additional Support and Benefits

Once an individual begins claiming Pension Credit, they gain access to a range of additional support and benefits. These include:

  1. Housing Benefit

Pension Credit recipients may be eligible for Housing Benefit, which assists with covering housing costs. This benefit can provide much-needed relief, particularly for individuals facing financial strain due to high rent or mortgage payments.

  1. Support for Mortgage Interest

For those with a mortgage, Pension Credit can also offer support in the form of assistance with mortgage interest payments. This benefit can help alleviate the financial burden of mortgage repayments, ensuring individuals can maintain their homes without undue stress.

  1. Council Tax Discount

Pension Credit recipients may qualify for a council tax discount. This reduction in council tax payments can make a substantial difference in individuals’ monthly expenses, freeing up funds for other essential needs.

  1. Free TV Licence for Individuals Aged 75 and Over

Individuals aged 75 and over who claim Pension Credit are eligible for a free TV licence. This benefit ensures that elderly individuals have access to entertainment and news without incurring additional costs.

  1. Assistance with NHS Dental Treatment, Glasses, and Transport Costs

Pension Credit recipients may also receive help with NHS dental treatment expenses, glasses, and transport costs for hospital appointments. This support ensures that individuals can maintain good oral health, have access to adequate vision correction, and attend necessary medical appointments without financial strain.

  1. Warm Home Discount Scheme

The Warm Home Discount Scheme offers assistance with heating costs to eligible pensioners. This benefit can be particularly valuable during the colder months when energy bills tend to rise. It ensures that individuals can keep their homes warm and comfortable without compromising their financial stability.

  1. Discount on Royal Mail Redirection Service

If a Pension Credit recipient is in the process of moving house, they may be entitled to a discount on the Royal Mail redirection service. This benefit helps reduce the costs associated with mail redirection during a move, making the transition smoother and more affordable.

Pension Credit presents a valuable opportunity for eligible individuals to receive additional financial support. With an estimated one million people yet to claim this benefit, it is crucial to take action and ensure that entitlements are not left unclaimed.
