Michael Sheen Not Happy With The Prince Of Wales Title

The outspoken Welsh actor who would like to see Welsh actors play Welsh characters has said he would like to see the title of Prince of Wales abolished.

Michael Sheen who lives in Baglan, Wales with his girlfriend, Swedish actress Anna Lundberg has said he sees ‘no reason’ why the ‘silly’ title should be used in the modern age, and ‘certainly not with someone who’s not Welsh’.

The respected actor who recently featured in a clip calling for the Brecon Beacons National Park to be renamed in the Welsh Bannau Brycheiniog, is not alone with his opinion.

In 2022 two thousand people signed a petition calling for an end to the ‘Prince of Wales’ title. The petition called ‘end Prince of Wales title out of respect for Wales’ said that since the days of the Welsh Princes the title has been “held exclusively by Englishmen as a symbol of dominance over Wales”.

“The title remains an insult to Wales and is a symbol of historical oppression and also implies that Wales is still a principality, undermining Wales’ status as a nation and a country,” the petition’s author, Trystan Gruffydd, said.

This is not the first time that Michael Sheen has hit out at the Royal family. He was outspoken when Prince William met the England team and presented them with shirts for the World Cup in Qatar instead of the Welsh team.

At the time Michael Sheen said that it was ‘inappropriate’ for William to give them England shirts given his title is the Prince of Wales.

It is not just the removal of the title of Prince of Wales that many would like to see, they would also like King Charles to keep to his word and reduce the Royal Family and the cost to the taxpayer.
