Wetherspoons in Skegness is expanding after purchasing the empty bookmakers next door
Major expansion plans have been announced for the Skegness Wetherspoons pub. The popular Red Lion Wetherspoons has always been a favourite with locals and holidaymakers but continues to run at full capacity. The expansion plans which many have said has been needed for some time would allow the venue’s capacity to be increased.
JD Wetherspoons have purchased the neighbouring property which was once the home to William Hill. The purchase of the empty shop will allow the Red Lion on Roman Bank to be expanded and cater for a growing customer base.
Improvements are planned for the interior and exterior of the property and would also include the entrance being placed on the corner of Roman Bank and Lumley Road. A lift is also planned and a feature staircase.
The application says: “The existing pub is working to capacity. Both the bar/ customer area and back of house areas are in need of expanding.
“In response, our client JD Wetherspoons has recently acquired the adjacent premise previously under operation as a bookmaker’s. The intention is to expand into the neighbouring property, where previously these two properties were already united.”
Customers of the Skegness Red Lion have welcomed the news with many saying the pub has been crying out for refurbishment work for many years.
The expansion plans have been submitted to East Lindsey District Council for their consideration.
