The exciting winter for heritage in Skegness begins!!
Work Is Finally Going To Start With The Transformation Of Skegness Town Centre. This week works finally start on the Town Centre Transformation Town Deal project in Skegness funded by the Department for Levelling Up, Communities, the Connected Coast Town Deal Board and Local Government and being delivered by Heritage Lincolnshire, Lincolnshire’s foremost heritage-led regeneration charity.
It has been a long time coming but this week sees an important change for Skegness Town Centre thanks to project funded by Department for Levelling Up.
The people of Skegness and local business owners have been demanding for some time for Skegness to be transformed to bring in more tourism. Now, their prayers have been answered.
This exciting project which is the first grant scheme to enhance the heritage of Skegness with a large chunk of the investment being made available to local businesses and property owners in Skegness Town Centre, will help change the reputation of Skegness.
The project will see Lumley Road, the High Street and Tower Gardens transformed.
A spokesman for Heritage Lincolnshire said: “This winter we will see the first projects delivered on Lumley Road. For a number of months, we have been working with local businesses and architects to gain planning permission for seven reinstated shopfronts.”
The first four have received planning permission and now have approval from the Grants Panel to proceed with the project which should be onsite this week.
One of the exciting developments is to reinstate the historic pleasure garden to its former glory through a scheme of hard landscaping and planting, as well as making accessibility improvements to the site so that it may be enjoyed by a greater range and diversity of people within the local community. Currently, the final costs are being approved before starting on site in the next few weeks.
Alice Ullathorne, Head of Heritage at Heritage Lincolnshire, said “We are so excited that these projects will finally be realised and thanks to the funding from the government and the great support from the Connected Coast Board and our fantastic grants panel. We hope this will show the potential of Skegness’s heritage offer as well as bringing back the quality of the past.”
Chris Baron, Chair of the Connected Coast Board, said: “These works are set to significantly enhance Skegness, restoring building shopfronts, rejuvenating Tower Gardens, creating better public realm and street scenes, and ultimately, revitalising the town.
“Through the Town Deal funding, we have a unique opportunity to invest in the town centre and bring long-lasting improvements that will benefit local residents and visitors to Skegness.
“It is fantastic to see that the delivery of the improvements is gathering pace, and I look forward to seeing the works progress throughout the year.”
Local businesses hope that with the transformation of Skegness it will stop the popular Lincolnshire seaside resort being named as the worst in the UK.
